In early August of 2022, Red Bank National Battlefield announced what had been found in a public archaeology dig that took place at the battlefield earlier that year. Numerous artifacts, as well as the remains of 13 or 14 Hessian soldiers were discovered during the dig. Wade Catts, the president/principal archaeologist for South River Heritage Consulting led the excavation. Jen Janofsky, the park director of Red Bank Battlefield Park, is also a professor of public history at Rowan University

At the February meeting, Wade Catts and Jen Janofsky will detail what was found during the dig. In addition, they’ll update us on what additional information has been learned about the artifacts and remains as a result of advanced diagnostic testing that has been performed on them Lastly, they’ll discuss plans for future digs at the battlefield, and how ARRTOP members (and other members of the public) can participate in them.

Wade P. Catts is the President and Principal of South River Heritage Consulting, an adjunct professor at Rowan University, and co-director of the Red Bank Battlefield Archaeology Project. He is a Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) with more than four decades of experience in the fields of cultural resources management, archaeology, and historic preservation.
