Notwithstanding modern claims to the contrary, George Washington enjoyed more tactical victories against the Crown Forces on battlefields he commanded than suffered defeats. One of those losses deeply studied and analyzed is the Battle of Brandywine which is usually attributed to Washington’s failing at intelligence gathering, and passive response to General Howe’s oft-repeated flank march upon the American right. The June speaker, Gary Ecelbarger, the author of George Washington’s Momentous Year: Twelved Months that Transformed the Revolution, Vol. I: The Philadelphia Campaign, July to December 1777, will demonstrate that Washington not only anticipated Howe’s flank movement, but he reacted decisively to it. So why did the Americans lose this battle?
Gary will also be promoting his recently released book, George Washington’s Momentous Year: Twelve Months that Transformed the Revolution, Vol. I: The Philadelphia Campaign, July to December 1777.
